Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
A Strategic First Step — When Indicated
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a low to moderate intervention fertility treatment in which prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation.
It is used selectively not routinely and only when the clinical profile supports it.
When IUI Makes Sense
IUI may be appropriate in cases of:
Mild to moderate male factor infertility
Unexplained infertility
Cervical factor infertility
Use of donor sperm when sperm retrieval is not feasible
It is typically combined with mild ovarian stimulation to improve timing and efficiency.
What to Expect
Outpatient procedure
No anesthesia
Minimal discomfort
Immediate return to daily activity
Results & Limits
Average success rates: up to 18–20% per cycle in optimal cases
If pregnancy does not occur after 3–4 properly conducted cycles, continued IUI offers diminishing returns
At that point, IVF becomes the medically and strategically appropriate next step.
Bottom Line
IUI is not a shortcut to IVF and it is not a long-term strategy.
Used correctly, it can be effective.
Used too long, it delays better outcomes.
